16th Century Counterpoint,: A style of musical composition which arose around and during the 1500s. Key features included modality (use of scales other than the major and minor modes we're accustomed to), long note values (typically, a half note would get one beat - vs. today's more widespread use of quarter notes), and an imitative structure (similar to rounds, where melodies enter in different voices at different times - think Row, Row, Row Your Boat or Frere Jacques). |
